There are many reasons behind reading manga, manhwa, or manhua. Other than its art, plot, and its genre, we might choose to read them based on its main character. Some of the main characters were born talented but others were born useless and has to climb up from down below. If we met a useless main character at the very beginning, we can stay by their side during their journey and watch them grow. But sometimes it became unbearable when we think the main characters were too weak or wishy-washy. We want him/her to become strong and find a quick path to become even stronger. However, our wish lies in the hand of the authors. We can only watch them grow slowly and thus testing our patience along the way.
On the other hand, there were several overpowered main characters. With these kinds of characters, we enjoy watching their easily-won-fight and appreciate villains with greater power. Along with their superiority above others, we might feel proud of them. So, having such an overpowered main character, is it good or bad?
Some mangas and manhwas have overpowered main characters such as Bam from Tower of God, Saitama from One Punch Man, and Desir Arman from A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special. Bam from Tower of God was born in the darkness, with no one to accompany him except Rachel, the girl that means everything for Bam. One day, when Rachel says she wants to go to the top of the tower, Bam accidentally went inside the tower to chase her. He has no abilities whatsoever and his only wish is to find Rachel. From the first floor, he showed extraordinary ability. Enormous courage, determination, and judgment. Along his journey to find Rachel, and thinks that he might found her at the top of the tower, Bam’s ability was improving fast. As a reader, we look forward to how he handles the test and somehow we know he would nail them. The suspense is there but we have faith in him.
A different story needs a different character. Saitama in One Punch Man shows us how great his power is. He looks ridiculous with his bald head but we know how strong he is. Just like the title of this manga, he could beat most of his enemy with just one punch. Somewhere along the line, I found myself got a bit bored with the indescribable power of Saitama. He can easily defeat monsters that can’t be defeated by others. However, this inhumane power emphasizes his character even more, in which we can still find that Saitama does everything a hero and common people do. His power didn’t make him evil and I think it’s good. But, just my personal opinion, the plot became too easy to predict.
Another thorough example might be Black Clover. If you follow the manga Black Clover, you get two very different main characters, Asta and Yuno. Asta is the useless one, born without magic, and has to do everything from scratch. Yuno, on the other hand, is a talented one. He became one talent desirable by all captains in Clover Kingdom and he has the four-leaf grimoire. His ability is above his age. Somehow, those main characters have their strength and weaknesses. Does overpowered main character a good thing or a bad thing? I think it doesn’t matter. As long as you enjoy reading the story, everything will be forgiven.
